Sally A. Smith (right), director of DFAS Commercial Pay Services, receives the American Society of Military Comptrollers' President's Award from ASMC president Audrey Davis, director of Information and Technology and chief information officer of DFAS. The annual award, the highest form of recognition given by the ASMC, was presented to Smith for "significant contributions to the society and/or the military comptrollership field," and for her continued support of ASMC chapter involvement at various commands. Smith was selected as this year's recipient by the ASMC's Executive Director, retired Army Lt. Gen. James F. McCall.

The American Society of Military Comptrollers national Professional Development Institute took place June 1-4 at the Cleveland Convention Center, with some 3,500 attendees from across the country, England and Japan attending.

The Buckeye Chapter had 60 members in attendance, with more than 40 members serving as committee chairs or volunteers.

The chapter co-hosted this year's PDI together with the Aviation Chapter of Dayton, Ohio and the Cleveland Chapter.

According to Pam Nowicki, Buckeye Chapter president, "Our chapter members chaired the Program, Protocol and Chapter Fair committees during the PDI. The "Team Ohio" concept used in co-hosting this event created an exciting, successful convention."

"I am proud of the teamwork and high spirits displayed by both the Buckeye Chapter and "Team Ohio" members," Nowicki added.

In addition to a variety of professional seminars and workshops and a trade exhibit featuring displays from the Department of Defense, contractors and other federal agencies, convention attendees were treated to a variety of noted speakers.

Included in this group were Ken Krieg, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and director for Program Analysis and Evaluation at DoD; Heather Whitestone McCallum, the first woman with a disability to be crowned Miss America (1995) and Dr. Ben Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore.

Commenting on the number of military personnel in attendance, Steve Berry, of the Program Committee, said, "From the opening ceremony through the finale, the ASMC PDI 2004 was filled with unbelievable patriotism.

"We celebrated our mission from the salute to our service men and women to the hope for our future, found in Cleveland's Singing Angels.

"Job well done, ASMC."

PDI attendees were also able - and encouraged - to socialize during the "Heart of Rock-n-Roll" welcome reception and the annual Chapter Fair, a school carnival-like atmosphere featuring display booths, games and other activities.

The ASMC is a non-profit, educational and professional organization for military and civilian personnel involved in the field of military comptrollership.
